Landscaping Projects To Keep You Busy

If you’re like most people, you may have suddenly found yourself with some extra time on your hands. While the wise and prudent thing to do is limit your interactions with large groups of people, that doesn’t mean that you need to sit around doing nothing! Your landscape project beckons, and MJS Materials has some great ideas that will keep you from going stir-crazy while we all endure some self-imposed solitude.

Add Edging To Your Pathways

Has your lawn decided to blur the line between what is technically a pathway and what is grass? Now is a great time to lay down the law on your lawn and redraw those boundary lines. We will make one recommendation when buying edging — spring for the sturdier materials, like metal edging. Plastic edging will fail you in no time. A great way to plan out your new pathway edges is to use a hose, lay it out where your new edging will be, then go along the hose with a lawn edger or spade, carving out your new edges. All that’s left after that is to place your sturdy steel or aluminum edging into the trench and tap it into place with a rubber mallet. If you’re feeling particularly fancy, you can add a gravel border, further preventing your yard from laying claim to your walkways. Project done!

How To Calculate For Sand Delivery Services

When you’re beginning a landscaping, construction or recreational project that requires an unknown amount of sand, there are some very simple calculations that you can make to estimate how much sand to order. Calculations will be a little different depending on how you’re going to be using sand, such as using the sand to fill holes or other voids, or if you’re using sand as topdressing for a large area. These calculations work for a variety of materials, and may even harken back to your geometry classes. Hopefully some of these simple formulas ring a bell!

Calculating Sand Amounts For Filling Holes

There are a few variables that you need to determine to calculate an accurate amount of sand or soil that will fill holes in your landscaping or construction project. To determine these variables, you should first determine the square footage of the space. Use this simple formula:

  • Length x Width = Square Footage

Next, you calculate the cubic feet by multiplying the square footage amount by the depth of the hole, like this:

  • Square Footage x Depth (in feet) = Cubic Footage

Does Your Yard Need Something More?

Have you stood out in your yard, looking over the landscape design, and thought to yourself, “I just think there needs to be something more?” At MJS Materials in Florida, we believe the answer to your question may be simple — rock! There are some very simple and effective ways that you can implement rock elements into your landscape design to make it pop. Don’t settle for a landscape that you don’t enjoy spending time in! Take the time to read through some of our ideas for making your yard a haven for you and your family.

Ideas For Landscaping With Rock

These are some of our favorite ideas for using rock in and around your landscape. We sincerely hope that these ideas spark your creativity, and that you contact the rock materials experts at MJS for all of the supplies you need! That said, here’s our list:

Replace Your Mulch

Mulch is great and all, but what happens when the wind picks up? You may as well have used tissue paper in your landscaping. Using rock in place of mulch not only looks great, but is much more practical and low maintenance. With mulch, it’s likely that you’ll need to replace it every season or so. With rock, however, those puppies aren’t going anywhere in a hurry. The durability of rock means that it can last the lifetime of your landscaping! There are design elements to using rock that will make your plants more striking as well— the light color of rock that you use helps your foliage to stand out, having a more impressive outline. The use of rock also naturally discourages weed growth, especially when a weed barrier has been put in place. Rock has the added function of helping control water levels- water drains faster through rock than mulch, won’t become muddy, and helps prevent standing water from pooling around your plants.

The Versatility Of Pea Gravel

Pea gravel is a home landscape designer’s dream come true. It is inexpensive, looks great, feels nice underneath bare feet, and can be used in several different ways! The smooth, rounded edges of pea gravel are formed naturally by water, slowly eroding rocks into small, pea-shaped pebbles, hence the name. MJS Materials is proud to have been providing Florida residents and businesses with the highest quality pea gravel for over 30 years! We’d like to take this opportunity to share with you some of our favorite ways that you can use pea gravel around your home or business. Take advantage of this versatile material for your next project, including…

Aquariums

Who says that every gravel project has to be a huge undertaking? You can start small with a project like making your aquarium stunning with pea gravel. With a variety of colors to choose from, you can make your aquarium fit your style. You can also use pea gravel for small water features around your landscapes. This is a nice way to get your feet wet with pea gravel (pun intended.)

Garden Landscaping

Pea gravel can be an excellent accent to your garden design. You can create a border around your garden using pea gravel that both looks great and serves a practical, functional purpose — gravel is excellent for controlling the flow of water. Standing water can flood your garden, but having a protective border of pea gravel helps to drain water faster, preventing water, muddy pools from forming. Gravel can also be effective for controlling your weed population, making it more difficult for them to grow out of control. You may also consider featuring something of a conversation starter in your yard design, like a Zen garden. These gardens help promote a sense of peace and interactivity with your garden design. They can be both relaxing to look at and enjoyable to use!

That sand that you see between pavers in those beautiful walkways is actually just half of the sand that makes this process work. When you’re using sand to lay pavers, you actually use the material in two crucial steps. The type of sand that you use for your project can affect the end-result quality, so it’s important to make the right decision. Failure to do so could result in pavers shifting, sinking, or being uneven.

What Exactly Is Drain Rock?

Drain rock is the term used for any type of rock that is designed to help manage your landscape area deal with moisture. There are many practical applications for drain rock, and we’ll go into a little bit more detail on those in this blog post. Using rocks as part of a drainage system has been used in architecture for thousands of years. The one thing that all drain rock has in common is that they have a general porous texture which allows for the free movement and absorption of water.

When deciding on the type of drain rock to use, it is helpful to know that you have options regarding the size of the rock. You can use fairly large rocks, up to about 1 ½” diameter, all the way down to pea gravel. Different sizes tend to work a little better for different applications, which we’ll get into now.

How Can You Use Drain Rock?

While the purpose of drain rock is mostly functional, that doesn’t mean they can’t necessarily look quite nice as well. Different functions call for different types of drain rock. Drain rock comes in a variety of sizes and colors, so the possibilities are endless! There are dozens of potential uses for drain rock, but we’re just going to have a quick look at some of the most common applications.

Wondering How To Use Gravel Around Your Home?

Gravel is an incredibly versatile building material, both around your home, and in construction projects all over the world. For thousands of years, forms of gravel have been used by people to make their lives better. We’d like to walk you through six of our favorite applications for using gravel, which will hopefully inspire you to contact us and let us provide you with all of the materials you need to start your gravel project! Let’s get started, shall we?

Skip The Mulch

Gravel can be an effective substitute for using mulch in your landscaping! While mulch may look nice in some yards, once the wind kicks up, you can look forward to your mulched flower beds or planter areas practically blowing away. Gravel is effective at preventing moisture from evaporating from the soil, which can be a huge benefit to plants, especially when the weather turns warm. Retaining valuable moisture for your plants is something that gravel can just do better than mulch.

You do have some options when it comes to gravel as a substitute for mulch — when it comes to aesthetics, or decorative appeal, you have the option of small, smooth gravel that is easy on bare feet, or you can go for more coarse, rough gravel for a more rustic look. Typically, this rougher gravel stays in place better, so it could be ideal for traffic areas (but not so much for those bare feet.) It’s up to you what kind of gravel you’d use for a mulch substitute.
